SUMMARY:Take Back the Night: Pagan Skies
DESCRIPTION:The constellations that we are taught about in Western culture and which are used in Western astrology are an amalgam of Greek\, Roman\, Arabic\, and Latin influences which were recognized by colonial powers and represent the Northern hemisphere. The constellations that came to be used in the Southern hemisphere are largely a display of the scientific achievements of European colonial powers and some wildlife they found interesting. Both entirely ignore the sky cultures of indigenous people around the world. In the late 16th and early 17th century attempts were made by several astronomers who were Christian clergy to completely erase the sky and replace it with an entirely Christian sky. This didn’t succeed partially because the various clergy involved could not agree on the elements of these skies and partially because the principal astronomers of the day were busy creating constellations in honor of their royal sponsors. Colonial powers created systems such as the Residential Schools which partnered with the church to eliminate indigenous language and culture\, resulting in many sky cultures being lost\, in some cases permanently.\n\nWe know that the ancestors of our Heathen brothers and sisters were great navigators yet due to this corrosive colonial activity much of their sky lore has been lost. Very little is known about Celtic skies except bits and pieces that have come down through translations of translations of verbal lore\, although discovery of the Coligny calendar has given us some pieces to work with.\n\nThe World Asterisms Project is a living project which I founded in June 2021 for the Inclusivity and Diversity Committee of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada as a celebration of the sky cultures of the world: It continues to grow as the process of naming the stars above is an ongoing process. It is also growing as ethnoastronomers and researchers investigate old records and interview elders and recover previously lost sky cultures. The World Asterisms Project has so far examined over 580 of the world’s cultures and recorded 15\,229 asterisms and 1\,633 names of the Sun\, Moon\, and Planets.\nKerr Cuhulain is the Grand Master and founder of a Wiccan order of Knighthood called the Order of Paladins\, now based in Sechelt\, British Columbia. The Order of Paladins embraces the Warrior philosophies\, precepts and code of chivalry outlined in Kerr’s books. The Order of Paladins is a study group for people interested in Wiccan magick\, energy work and rituals related to the Warrior path\, focusing on empowerment\, personal development and creative expression. The training focuses on the effective use of magickal energy and developing psychic skills. The Order of Paladins is constantly developing new rituals\, and magick and studying our Warrior philosophy. SUMMARY:The Witch Trials in Abiquiu\, NM
DESCRIPTION:A little-studied witchcraft trial took place at Abiquiu\, New Mexico\, between 1756 and 1766.  The witchcraft outbreak took place less than a century after the Pueblo Revolt and symbolized a resistance by the Genízaros (hispanicized Indians) of Abiquiu to forced Christianization. The response of the Church and the Spanish government stand in sharp contrast to the pattern set in Salem 150 years earlier.  We will examine the unique history of this tiny New Mexico village\, the nature of the accusations made and the response of the Spanish colonial governor and the Church. \nRowan has been active in the pagan community of northern New Mexico for over 35 years.  She is a third degree initiate of the Ladywoods tradition and currently serves as the Dean of the School of Magick and Witchcraft at Ardantane.  In her mundane life\, she holds a BS in education from UT El Paso\, and an MBA from UNM.  She has taught at festivals in New Mexico and Colorado and nationally\, but enjoys teaching at Ardantane the most. \nThis online class is free to supporting members of Ardantane. SUMMARY:The Bardic Way: Sharing the Stories\, Shaping the World
DESCRIPTION:What comes to mind when you think of the Bardic Tradition? Is it a soulful-looking medieval youth strumming thoughtfully on a lute? Maybe it’s William Shakespeare\, the “Bard of Stratford-on-Avon” that you imagine. Or it might be a mighty warrior-bard like the fictional Gurney Halleck from “Dune”\, or the very non-fictional Hindi Charan bards of Rajasthani\, composing songs of brave deeds while riding fearlessly into battle and witnessing them first-hand. \nThe Bard manifests in many forms\, across many world cultures and eras. In this seminar we will briefly cast an academic gaze over the broad scope of Bardic history and lore in diverse civilizations. We will then begin to explore the manifestation of the Bardic tradition in our Pagan and Wiccan communities\, our circles and rituals\, and our festivals of the seasons. DESCRIPTION:Three attributes of the Goddess are love\, wisdom\, and power. As we seek to emulate Her\, each of us must ask whether we have embraced our personal power and are using it in Her service\, for the good of the world. But how do we find our power? How do we nurture it? How do we express it in our daily lives and project it in the world in life-enhancing ways? How can we avoid the traps of arrogance and hubris and exert our strengths wisely\, humbly\, collectively\, for the good of all? Join Amber and Rowan as we explore this essential and difficult subject. \nAmber K is a third degree priestess of the Wiccan faith. She was initiated at the Temple of the Pagan Way in Chicago and served on the Council of Elders there. Her books on magick and the Craft have been widely circulated in the United States and Europe\, and for 35 years she has traveled across the U.S. teaching the Craft. She has worked with Circle and the Re-Formed Congregation of the Goddess\, and served as National First Officer of the Covenant of the Goddess for three terms. She is a founder of Our Lady of the Woods and the Ladywood Tradition of Wicca\, and currently is Executive Director of Ardantane\, a Wiccan/Pagan seminary is northern New Mexico. \n  \nRowan has been active in the pagan community of northern New Mexico for over 35 years. She is a third degree initiate of the Ladywoods tradition and currently serves as the Dean of the School of Magick and Witchcraft at Ardantane. In her mundane life\, she holds a BS in education from UT El Paso\, and an MBA from UNM. DESCRIPTION:This is the fourth session in a series that begins on May 7th. \nAn introduction to the Old Religion\, the Craft of the Wise; with history\, gods and goddesses\, magick and ritual\, spiritual practices\, customs and traditions\, covens and solitaries\, cosmology and myths\, the Wheel of the Year and more\, from experienced Witches. This class will be taught over four evenings online (Tuesdays in May 2024). Students will be asked to complete assignments between classes to further their understanding and experience with the subjects covered. \nThis course is FREE to anyone interested in learning the basic principles of Wicca. \nBridget and Rowan have a combined total of over 70 years of experience practicing and teaching Wicca to students of all backgrounds and skill levels.
